Parole revocation sought for pot grower
Associated Press - October 28, 2009 6:55 PM ET
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma is seeking to revoke the parole of a man sentenced to decades in prison for growing marijuana in a case that has drawn the attention of advocates seeking to reform the state's drug laws.
A parole revocation hearing was held Wednesday in Oklahoma City for 51-year-old William Joseph Foster.
Foster initially was sentenced to more than 90 years in prison for growing marijuana that he claimed was used to treat his arthritis pain. An appeals court later reduced that term to 20 years in prison, and he was paroled after serving more than four years.
The Department of Corrections maintains Foster refused to abide by the terms of his parole while he was living in California.
Advocates for reforming Oklahoma's drug laws say the case is a waste of state resources.
